HIS SOLO FLIGHT
ROLLS-ROYCE OFFICIAL’S SON CIRCLES DERBY AIRPORT
Sergeant E. E. Hives, of the R.A.F. Volunteer Reserve, son of Mr. E. W. Hives, a director and Works General Manager of Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., at Derby, yesterday afternoon made the second solo flight of pupils trained in Derby Airport.
Sergeant Hives started training with the Reserve on October 20, and yesterday he took up a Magister monoplane, circled the airport, performed several exercises, and landed after 20 minutes in the air.
Sergeant Hives is employed in the Sub-contracting Department of Messrs. Rolls-Royce at Derby.

PILOT OFFICER E. E. HIVES
MISSING AFTER R.A.F. RAID

Pilot Officer Ernest Edward Hives, son of Mr E. W. Hives, a director and works general manager of Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Derby, and of Mrs. Hives, of Hazeldene, Duffield, has been officially reported missing since October 17.
Receiving his commission three months ago, he was attached to a Coastal Command Squadron, and he has taken part in a number of bombing raids, chiefly on the Channel ports.
He was reported missing after the bombing of German ships.
OLD DERBEIAN
Pilot Officer Hives, who is 23, was educated at Derby School, and was employed by Rolls-Royce at the Derby and Crewe factories.
He was a member of Derby Rugby Club and Chevin Golf Club.
As one of the R.A.F. Volunteer Reserve, he was among the first to receive training at Derby Airport.
